Battleship Kassel was constructed in 820 A.S., and initially served as a rear guard vessel. Recently, it was stationed in the Omega-47 system. The additional support offered by this Jormungand class battleship was meant to help secure the system, and increased the morale of local Hessian forces. The ship was then deployed to Omega-7 in 825 AS, where it raided the passing traffic, the local mining operations and Rheinland patrols that lost their way in the Walker Nebula.
Following the Bretonian push to nationalize Aland Shipyard, the Red Hessians decided to use the chance not only to aid their formerly secret suppliers in the Independent Miners Guild, but also try to assert dominance in the Omega-3 System, using the miners' help and Bretonia's weakness.
The Kassel moved to Omega-3 through Omega-5 using the Jump Hole network and surprised the Bretonian garrison at Planet Sprague. Using its forward gun and its bomber squadrons, the Kassel managed to destroy the already crippled and immobilized Battleship Gwent. However, what the Hessians had not anticipated was that the Bretonian Norfolk Fleet would already be in Omega-3. Its sizeable bomber wing launched a counterattack which not only let the Kassel know of the Norfolk's presence, but also heavily damaged the ship. It retreated to Omega-5 at full speed to avoid destruction, but the due to the damage suffered its engines failed only a short time after bringing the ship to the very relative safety of Omega-5.
Currently located in an asteroid field with its engines inoperable and only half its armament functional, while safe from a full House fleet, the Kassel is a tempting target for the Corsairs from Cadiz. As Ronneburg does not possess any facilities capable of repairing ships of that size, the Kassel's best hope is to be towed to the Coalition shipyards in Omega-52 under heavy escort.
