The Barghest is a mythological creature from English folklore: a monstrous black dog with huge teeth and claws that comes at night to bring sorrow and fright. The fearsome name belongs to a ship no less fearsome: designed by the Liberty Rogues, the Barghest Bomber is the most heavily armored bomber built in known space, comparable to small gunships and Super Heavy Fighters in size. Piloted by a crew of three, this ship is not only capable of destroying enemy capital ships, but also has a large cargo hold capable of carrying much more salvage than any other fighter could take aboard.
This vessel, and the technology powering it, is jealously guarded by both of its parent organizations. Any pilot outside of their ranks found to be in its possession is subject to a short life indeed.

Since my old review is a bit out of date, here is another one for the modern times. First and formost, the Barghest is a beast. She has an amazing armor rating, even for a bomber, and a power core to match, and she can mount a freighter shield, a rather nice piece of kit that can range from double to triple fighter shield strength, allowing this thing to take a proper beating. She has 4 guns and two turrets, but the turrets only fire backwards to a degree… energy guns make for good general attack guns, but you may want to try out pulse guns to strip shields faster because this thing can just spam novas like no one’s business. Nova’s have been improved dramatically since the last mod update, and this thing is a great at using them, hiding just outside a capital ship’s effective range to lob some off before moving in to fire a SNAC after the ship goes after a closer target. You should always have a SNAC mounted on this thing, and then a torpedo of your choice, either the Nova or the new EMP Incapacitator torpedo, which does not use as much energy and is a bit better at hitting targets because of the lack of engine delay while firing. Now this is a pirate bomber, but this beast against a transport is simply overkill. Two well piloted Barghests can take out a battleship so long as it has no fighter cover, and it can solo a cruiser if you have your wits about you. However this thing is the size of a morbidly obese blue whale, and maneuvers like one as well, so a fighter can spell your death once it gets behind you, because you will never shake it. The infamous Barghest is a fine product from the Rogues. She's meant for one purpose only: torpedoing stuff to death. And she does it alright. Being a Heavy Bomber, the agility is pretty bad comparing to other bombers. The size is okay, and so are the gun placements. Snac is located a bit left or right from the centre, which is good. The freighter shield helps more than one would think. All in all, a solid cap hunting bomber.
Pros: Damage (Heavy Bomber), Snac placement
Cons: Agility
Rating: 7/10
Hardpoints
- 4 Class 2 Guns
- 2 Class 4 Guns
- 3 Cruise Disruptor OR Fighter Torpedo
- 1 Mine Dropper
- 1 Countermeasure Dropper
