Samarium is a moderately hard, silvery metal that easily oxidizes in air. One of its radioactive isotopes is used in cancer treatment, while another isotope is used as a control rod in nuclear reactions due to its high rate of neutron absorption. The metal's primary use is in Samarium-Cobalt magnets, which are exceeded in strength only by Neodymium magnets, although Samarium-Cobalt magnets are more resistant to demagnetization at high temperatures.
