The HMS-Royal.Caridea was a Cromwell-class battleship under the command of Joseph Farley during the First Tau War. In 818 A.S., Caridea was sent to the Tau front to assist Battleship Macduff in Tau-31. She is presumed destroyed.

History

Joseph Farley - constructor and captain of the Caridea

Development and construction

The Royal Caridea was built at Southampton Shipyard in the New London system as part of Cromwell-class Development Project. Initially, only one prototype of the class was planned to be built.

Joseph Farley joined the Project in 815 A.S. He modified the initial concepts of the Low-emission Powercore and Cloaking Device, thereby reducing the overall cost of the vessel. Full development was completed in 817 A.S. Further escalation of the war pushed BAF command to build two battleships of the class: the Cromwell and the Royal Caridea. Caridea's construction was supervised by Farley himself. He was also responsible for much of the Caridea's frame and internal systems design.

The construction was a massive undertaking. As resources were scarce, Caridea ended up with a lighter Mk VII armor instead of expensive Mk VIII. Her construction was finished a week after the Cromwell was built, just to be almost immediately thrown into the battle of Tau-31.

Shakedown cruise

Joseph requested a posting to the vessel he worked on for all these years - the Caridea. After construction, Captain Farley took command of the ship at the order of the Admiralty Board.

Final systems shakedown was performed at Southampton Shipyard. The vessel was christened with a bottle of whiskey Dublin. Her maiden voyage took place in New London and Cambridge systems.

First week

After ceremonies, Caridea was assigned to patrol Bretonian territories. For Joseph it was a perfect time to socialize with his crew. The position of warship captain excited him, yet he grew accustomed to it. Everything was going well, and Caridea faced no hostiles during the 1-week patrol. There was one problem, though. Chief Engineer reported minor fluctuations in the powercore matrix, but they were within normal parameters.

Battle of Tau-31

Bretonian Defenders

Two weeks after commissioning, the Caridea, alongside Cromwell, dispatched to Tau-31. Their task was to assist Macduff Battlegroup in a desperate attempt to stop Kusarians. But Kusari had already deployed the fleet into Tau-31. The battle was intense. The Caridea fought one enemy battleship and several escorts at the same time. She managed to destroy one cruiser, but her shields were down, and enemy hits started to land on Caridea's hull. Kusarians overwhelmed the Bretonian defenders at the gate: they destroyed numerous ships and forced surviving vessels to withdraw. Farley decided to engage the cloaking device and retreat with the remaining forces. The device was almost charged when a "Nova" torpedo hit the engines. Cloak turned on, but the ship was able to move only at 25% impulse power, and cruise engines were off-line.

Aftermath

After the crippling torpedo hit, the rate of fluctuations in the powercore matrix increased drastically. It caused the shutdown of the main power grid. With Caridea's engines damaged and her core compromised, it became clear - she is unable to retreat to Newcastle with the rest of the Battlegroup. Farley decided to hide the battleship in the asteroid field.

On December 2nd, 818 A.S., at 1500 he received orders from Kyle Marshall, captain of the Cromwell. Farley and his crew entered cryogenic stasis and waited for the rescue.
