The Zapper Photon Ray is a recent invention derived from a study by a small Orbital Spa and Cruise engineering team tasked to design a sustained photon emitter that could create a brilliant beam of light over several thousand meters continuously. Orbital Spa intended for this technology to be used in orbiting commercial billboards. However, during one of the tests a power surge overcharged the emitter, causing it to discharge well beyond its operating limits. When the resulting blast blew clean through the armor of a nearby Pelican class armored Transport, the design team realised they might have stumbled onto something more useful then a floating billboard.
Unable to design it further on their own, Orbital Spa contacted several science teams to help further develop it. Two months later, the "Zapper" was installed on the first Orbital Spa transport. A few months later, all the major houses "miraculously" made similar breakthroughs, making the weapon a widely available point defense for transports and capital ships.
As a weapon, the Zapper is a highly accurate but low damage point defense turret. Gunners are encouraged to train multiple turrets on a single target, as individual shots are unlikely to do significant damage.
