The HMS-Royal Caridea was a Cromwell-class battleship under the command of Joseph Farley during the First Tau War. In 818 A.S. she was sent to the Tau front, to assist the Macduff in Tau-31. Presumed destroyed.

History

Joseph Farley, constructor and captain of the Caridea

Development and construction

The Royal Caridea was built at Southampton Shipyard in the New London system as the part of Cromwell-class Development Project, which began in 813 A.S. Initially only one prototype of the class was planned to be built.

In 815 A.S. Joseph Farley, an outstanding engineer, joined the Project. He managed to modify initial concepts of the Low-emission Powercore and Cloaking Device, thereby reducing the overall cost of the vessel. Full development was completed in 817 A.S. Due to the further escalation of the war, it was decided to build two battleships of the class: the Cromwell and the Royal Caridea. Caridea's construction was supervised by Farley himself, who was also responsible for much of the Caridea's frame and internal systems design.

The construction was a massive undertaking, involving thousands of people across disciplines. As resources were scarce, Caridea ended up with a lighter Mk VII armor, instead of overly expensive Mk VIII. Her construction was finished a week after the Cromwell was built, just to be almost immidiately thrown into the battle of Tau-31.

Shakedown cruise

Joseph asked to be assigned to the vessel he worked on for all this years - the Caridea. Upon the completion of her construction, Captain Farley took command of the ship at the order of the Admiralty Board.

Final systems shakedown was conducted at Southampton Shipyard. The vessel was christined with a bottle of whiskey "Dublin". Her maiden voyage took place in New London and Cambridge systems and was quite spectacular.

First week

After ceremonies, Caridea was assigned to patrol Bretonian territories. Joseph spent this time socializing with the crew and getting used to his new position of the warship captain. Everything was going well and Caridea didn't face any hostiles during the 1-week patrol. All systems functioned normally, however Chief Engineer reported a minor fluctuations in the powercore matrix. But they were considered to be within normal parameters.

Battle of Tau-31

Bretonian Defenders

Two weeks after commissioning, Caridea alongside with Cromwell dispatched to Tau-31 to assist Macduff Battlegroup in desperate attempt to stop Kusarians. But Kusari already deployed their fleet into Tau-31. The battle was an intense one. Caridea fought an enemy battleship and two support vessels at the same time. She managed to destroy one support vessel , but her shields were down and enemy hits landed on Caridea's hull. Kusarians overwhelmed the Bretonian defenders at the gate, destroying numerous ships, and forcing others to withdraw. Farley decided to engage cloaking device and retreat with other vessels. Device was almost fully charged, when "Nova" torpedo hit Caridea's engines. Cloak turned on, but ship was able to move only at 25% impulse power, cruise was off-line.

Aftermath

After the faitful torpedo hit, rate of fluctuations in the powercore matrix increased, resulting in shutdown of the main powergrid. With Caridea's engines damaged and her core compromised it became clear, that she is unable to retreat to Newcastle with the rest of the Battlegroup. Farley decided to hide battleship in the asteroid field.

On December 2nd, 818 A.S., at 1500 he received orders from Kyle Marshall, captain of the Cromwell. Farley and his crew entered cryogenic stasis and waited for the rescue.

Present Day

Today, the current status of the Royal Caridea is unknown to many, as she still presumed destroyed and classified as M.I.A. by the Armed Forces. In reality, she was recently brought back from the dead. Being in a vulnerable position and still unknown to the Royalists who aren't even aware of a threat from the inside.
