Planetary Bodies

Planet New Paris

Planet New Paris, Ile du Palais
Planet New Paris, Saint-Denis
Planet New Paris, Saint-Germain
New Paris was the first planet colonized by the Gallic Sleeper Ship's arrival in 84 A.S. (0 AGS). Biologically, the world is similar to Earth of the Carboniferous period (late Paleozoa). It has vast forests in equatorial and moderate regions but only a few large animal species capable of breathing atmospheric oxygen. Oxygen concentration on New Paris is similar to human-inhabited Earth, being about 24 percent (unlike true Carboniferous on Earth when the concentration was almost twice as high). This did not allow large insect species to develop, leaving more room for smaller amphibious tetrapods and predecessors of birds. Colder continental areas were scarcely inhabited and had no large land plants. Oceanic wildlife is extremely rich with a wide variety of species, most of them not bearing any similarity with any known Earth animals. The planet's climate was more or less similar to Earth, with temperatures as high as 60°C in equatorial regions, and frequently dropping below -60°C in polar regions.
New Paris has undergone several periods of development, starting with isolated colonies that had highly reproductive populations. Very soon afterwards, large cities emerged from those settlements, and food demand forced them to exploit huge amounts of land to plant crops and raise animals brought from Earth. In many areas, indigenous wildlife was fully replaced with domesticated animals and plants originating from Earth, and accompanying species. Rapid industrial growth resulted in severe pollution that still affects certain areas of the planet, but was mostly cleared out in subsequent centuries. In about 200 AGS, the population of the planet was nearing 100 million, and huge urbanization centers emerged in moderate climate areas near convenient harbors. Those centers were named after old Paris districts, and three of them (Ile du Palais, Saint-Germain and Saint-Denis) have their own orbital docking rings.
The population grew steadily and reached 5 billion by 600 AGS. Millions of people relocated off-world, with massive relocation campaigns taking place to populate worlds with huge resource deposits and industrial capacity, like Amiens (Provence), Bourges (Berry) and later Marne (Champagne). Apart from the relocation programs, many people left New Paris to find cheaper places to live and "new beginnings" for themselves, since New Paris gradually became the most expensive place to live in all of Gallia, except for resort planets, and Marseille in particular. Remote worlds with less comfortable climate provided (and still provide) far lower land and property costs. Ecology issues forced the removal of heavy industry away from New Paris to space stations in Ile-de-France and beyond. The few remaining old-style factories now serve as museums where citizens can observe impressive industrial landmarks similar to those seen on XXII century Earth. Currently, the planet with its 5,3 billion population is considered to be one of the most comfortable places to live in all of Gallia. The planet also never lost its status as the capital of the House of Gallia. Offices of the Royal Government and Royal Chancery, as well as the High Courts and the Parliament, are located within the largest urban centers of New Paris. The monarch with his or her court usually inhabits one of the numerous summer or winter Royal residences.

Mennecy

Mennecy is a small dwarf planet located far off the orbital plane of the Ile-de-France system. Officially, it is an ordinary solar body comprised of methane ice and silicates that was formerly a moon of Planet Creteil. Some sources, however, indicate that Melun Research Facility was built in its orbit for a reason, and the dwarf planet contains valuable deposits of certain resources that the Royal Navy prefers to keep secret from the public and from corporations.

Escape Velocity: N/A

Planet Chateau-Tierry

Chateau-Tierry is a remote desert world on the outskirts of Ile-de-France. In the earliest days of Ile-de-France's colonization it was considered as a potential site for a human settlement. Discovery of jump holes around the system rendered those plans obsolete since neighboring systems offered more attractive colonization options.
Planet Chateau-Tierry

Diameter: 9,430 km.
Mass: 4.48 x 10e24 kg.
Terrain: Desert
Temperature: -146°C to 20°C
Escape Velocity: 9.87 km/sec

Planet Les Ulis

Planet Les Ulis was one of the first solar bodies surveyed in Ile-de-France. Several mining outposts were established planetside in 100-120 AGS, but they were all closed down around 400 AGS when easily mineable deposits of aluminium and Beryllium were depleted, and the presence of mining operations on this inhospitable world was no longer necessary. Rambouilette Shipyard orbits the planet.

Diameter: 7,280 km.
Mass: 4.63 x 10e24 kg.
Terrain: Barren
Temperature: -58°C to 120°C
Escape Velocity: 2.71 km/sec

Brunoy

Brunoy is the largest moon of Planet Creteil. It is a barren world devoid of atmosphere, located within the Senart Debris Field.
Brunoy

Location: F/6
Diameter: 1,143 km.
Mass: 6.92 x 10e22 kg.
Terrain: Desert
Temperature: -144°C to 80°C
Escape Velocity: 2.71 km/sec

Planet Meudon

Meudon is a large gas giant with thick atmosphere mainly comprised of hydrogene and helium with notable presence of methane. It is a well-known landmark on the trade lane route from Ile-de-France to Maine. Since early 200s, several stations were located in its orbit. Currently, Versailles Residence is the only one remaining. Shortly after Versailles was completed, other stations in the area were disassembled due to "safety precautions", and their components were transferred to construction sites located in Maine.

Terrain: N/A
Temperature: N/A
Escape Velocity: 18.90 km/sec

Planet Clermont

Clermont is a medium-sized icy world located on the outskirts of Ile-de-France. The planet is devoid of any volcanic activity and has a crust comprised of water and methane ice. The planet is presumed to contain a dense rocky core. Thin atmosphere and lack of internal heat sources make the planet one of the coldest large solar bodies of Ile-de-France. By contrast, Montataire, the only moon of Clermont, is known for substantial volcanic activity and is actually warmer than its parent planet.

Location: E/2
Diameter: 9,475 km.
Mass: 7.87 x 10e24 kg.
Terrain: Barren
Temperature: -200°C to -40°C
Escape Velocity: 6.44 km/sec

Montataire

Montataire is the sole large moon of Planet Clermont. It is known for relatively high internal volcanic activity that once attracted a great deal of attention from Gallic astronomers. Some mining companies attempted to mine hydrocarbons from the planet, but deposits were hard to reach, and no further mining attempts were made.
Montataire

Location: D/3
Diameter: 2,541 km.
Mass: 6.14 x 10e23 kg.
Terrain: Barren
Temperature: -120°C to -10°C
Escape Velocity: 3.26 km/sec

Planet Creil

Planet Creil is often considered to be the core of an ancient gas giant that was deprived of its atmosphere by some cosmic cataclysm, possibly a planetoid impact. Most of the former atmosphere is thought to be condensing around the planet as a cloud known as Senlis. Hidden deep within the cloud, Creil is a planet fully covered with vast and deep oceans that contain varied chemical substances, including organic matter. Complex organic molecules present on Creil are considered to be protobionts that could, according to some researchers, be very similar to ones found on Earth around 3,5 billion years ago. Those protobionts are considered to be progenitors of organic life on Earth, and Creil offers a unique opportunity to study early stages of life formation in natural conditions. The planet is regularly visited by scientific expeditions from New Paris and elsewhere, but attempts to find traces of true organic life were unsuccessful thus far.
Planet Creil

Location: F/2
Diameter: 7,619 km.
Mass: 6.25 x 10e24 kg.
Terrain: Desert
Temperature: -52°C to 90°C
Escape Velocity: 8.55 km/sec

Villers-Cotterets

Villers-Cotterets is a small dwarf planet located within Retz Asteroid Field. It is the gravitational center of the field, being some 30 times heavier than all Retz asteroids combined. Much like the asteroids around it, Villers-Cotterets contained hydrocarbons that are currently mined out of the planet's crust using unmanned drones and shuttlecraft. The planet's surface is densely covered with asteroid impact craters.

Diameter: 2,574 km.
Mass: 2.79 x 10e23 kg.
Terrain: Desert
Temperature: -89°C to 90°C
Escape Velocity: 3.63 km/sec

Planet Creteil

A large purple ice giant with a beautiful ring system, Creteil is a true gem of the Ile-de-France system. Its atmosphere is typical for gas giants, comprised mainly of molecular hydrogen and helium. The latter is still mined from the planet's atmosphere. Creteil lies between two of the largest debris fields found in Gallia, Senart and Bobigny. Debris matter from both fields is slowly drifting towards the planet. Larger debris fall down into the planet's vast atmosphere, while many smaller components start orbiting the planet as parts of its outer rings. Planet Creteil has only one large moon, Brunoy.

Location: F/6
Diameter: 28,544 km
Mass: 16.45 x 10e24 kg
Terrain: N/A
Temperature: N/A
Escape Velocity: 19.45 km/sec

Planet Evry

Evry is a medium-sized gas planet with significant amounts of sulfur compounds in its atmosphere. Sulfur is the main contributor to its distinct yellow color. Unlike most gas giants, Evry has an internal structure of a small terrestrial planet, but cannot be considered one due to extensive and dense atmosphere. No economically practical use of the planet's outer atmosphere has been found to date. Landing on its surface is impossible due to extreme atmospheric pressure.
Planet Evry

Location: E/7
Diameter: 7,078 km
Mass: 1.45 x 10e23 kg
Terrain: N/A
Temperature: N/A
Escape Velocity: 3.98 km/sec

Planet Dourdan

Dourdan is located in the center of Chevreuse Asteroid Field. The planet was once extensively researched as a site for possible future terraforming. Ironically, surveys of the surrounding asteroid field conducted at the same time indicated presence of a jump hole leading to another system that was later named Orleanais. Discovery of a new means for interstellar travel rendered all ideas of terraforming Ile-de-France planets useless, since habitable planets were found in several systems that were one jump away from Ile-de-France.
Planet Dourdan

Location: C/7
Diameter: 8,506 km
Mass: 3.23 x 10e24 kg
Terrain: N/A
Temperature: N/A
Escape Velocity: 5.14 km/sec

Planet Dreux

Dreux is a typical gas planet located on the outskirts of Ile-de-France. This otherwise unremarkable world was a site of the only battle of the First Gallic War that took place in the system. Known as the Battle of Dreux, this battle was fought in 509 AGS.
Planet Dreux

Location: B/5
Diameter: 6,078 km
Mass: 2.97 x 10e23 kg
Terrain: N/A
Temperature: N/A
Escape Velocity: 4.53 km/sec

Billancourt

Billancourt is a small barren moon of Planet Meudon. The place has no economic significance, and the Crown approved its usage as a target for testing missile weaponry for Royal Navy capital ships. The tests stopped after Versailles was built in the vicinity of the moon, but an eagle-eyed observer from the palace station may still make out traces of nuclear warhead impacts among the numerous craters.

Mass: 8.37 x 10e22 kg
Terrain: Barren
Temperature: -132°C to 52°C
Escape Velocity: 2.41 km/sec

Clamart

Clamart is the only moon of Planet New Paris. Most of its surface is covered with ice, sometimes covered with thin layers of dust. The moon has a relatively heavy rocky core. Clamart was a logical choice for the first space expeditions from Planet New Paris. However, no significant mineral deposits were found on the moon, and it is currently used only as a training site for personnel subject to working in low-gravity conditions. Seen from the surface of New Paris as a large bright object, when full, Clamart has an apparent magnitude of -14,1.

Nebulae and Asteroids

Bobingy Debris Field

Bobingy Debris Field

Bobigny Debris Field was formed over five centuries. Construction of Sarcelles and Compiegne, as well as a number of no longer existent space stations, produced vast amounts of debris. The debris was ditched in a large area within the Hexagon not far from Sarcelles Facility. Trade lanes that come to Sarcelles from New Paris lie within the field.

Chevreuse Asteroid Field

Chevreuse is a mined-out asteroid field not far from New Paris. The trade lane and jump gate heading to Anjou come through this field. It also contains the jump hole leading to the Orleanais system. Before jump gate technology was developed, the jump hole was actively used by Gallic ships coming to and from Orleanais. Some traces of abandoned mining activity are still evident in the field. Nowadays, the jump hole is mostly used by pirate vessels coming from the direction of Beaumont and Avon. It is an unsafe place by Ile-de-France standards, and civilian ships are advised to avoid it.

Oise Asteroid Field

Oise is a large field of rock asteroids. It is most notable for an green nebula, known as Senlis Cloud, located in its center. Planet Creil is located within the Cloud. Due to presence of the trade lane and the jump gate leading to Picardy, the asteroid field is regularly patrolled by Gallic Royal Police, and piracy is under tight control.

Senart Debris Field

Senart is the largest debris field found in Gallia. Its current shape and location around Brunoy is mostly explained by the gravitational influence of Planet Creteil that Brunoy is a moon of. The origins of Senart are rather peculiar and, unlike Bobigny, cannot be fully explained by nearby space construction. Although there's no doubt that much of the Senart debris was generated by massive space station construction going on around Planet New Paris, some parts of the field are known to be radioactive and may be leftovers of a failed experiment that took place in Ile-de-France around 320-330 AGS.

Senlis Cloud

Senlis Cloud

Senlis Cloud is a bright orange nebula located within Oise Asteroid Field. The cloud is considered to be the former atmosphere of Planet Creil that lies within the field. Creil was once a huge gas giant that experienced a massive cosmic impact, possibly from a large rogue planetoid. Its atmosphere was torn apart and later condensed around its former core as Senlis Cloud, and the core itself evolved into an oceanic world of Creil.

Verrieres Asteroid Field

Verrieres is a mined-out asteroid field located not far from the jump gate leading to Maine. This field was a site of active mining for about three hundred years. The field was fully depleted of any valuable minerals circa 600 AGS, and mining facilities were relocated to other systems. Verrieres is currently an unremarkable place visited only by Police patrols, sight seeing freelancers and junkers who search for mining loot.

Vincennes Nebula

Vincennes Nebula

Vincennes is a huge gas nebula, the largest of two nebulae found in the Ile-de-France system. Neither the nebula nor the asteroid field that lies within it contain any valuable ores, and the area was never of much interest for corporations. The location, however, was perfect for the first asteroid base in Gallia that was built within a large asteroid by presently unknown pirate groups.

Space Stations

Beauvais Production Facility

Beauvais was one of the first space stations constructed by EFL Oil & Machinery back in the time when it was called EFL Oil. The company initially built its fortune on planetside mining of oil and producing a wide array of petroleum products. Moving to space was a necessary step forward to move the most ecologically hazardous productions away from the planet's surface, and to gain access to easily accessible resource deposits located in space.
EFL started constructing the station in the year 281 AGS, and in the hundreds of years to come the facility was rebuilt several times. It contains a number of highly efficient petroleum processing facilities, making Beauvais one of the primary sources of petrochemicals in the Ile-de-France system. The station is also known for being the closest lawful facility to Beaumont Base. Junkers are fairly frequent visitors at Beauvais, despite the attempts of EFL managers to drive the ambiguous faction away from the facility.

Compiegne Space Colony

Compiegne Space Colony is a modern civilian housing facility built within the Ile-de-France trade lane hexagon in 690 AGS. Initially operated by a medium-sized space company named Nery Space Construction, it was bought by Solar Engineering after Nery went bankrupt several years after the station's construction. The station was a risky purchase since it failed to become a financial success and was one of the primary reasons of Nery's bankruptcy. Yet, Solar successfully converted it into a luxurious population center for wealthy New Paris citizens who wanted to have an alternate place to live in the system. Since piracy in Ile-de-France is under strict control, civilian convoys in the area are rarely threatened. At Compiegne, citizens are granted a rare opportunity to fly a rented ship into space without obtaining a pilot license.
A large portion of Compiegne is an enclosed private area that is reportedly used as the space-based headquarter offices of Solar Engineering. This part of the station is sealed off from the rest of the space colony and is equipped with significantly reinforced outside defenses. Protected by the company's elite security division, which in many ways resembles a highly trained special operations unit, the headquarters area of Compiegne is not just a highly secured office and apartment complex, but also a fully fledged self-sufficient space fortress.

Beaumont Base (Ile-de-France)

Ironically, Beaumont Base bears the same name as a Junker base in Texas. This fact is most likely a coincidence, though some Junkers suggest that the idea to name the Texas base (built in 763 A.S.) came from the Gallic overseers of Junker activity in Sirius. Beaumont was built in Ile-de-France back in 303 AGS, shortly after Beauvais was constructed. The bulk of Beaumont's initial hull was comprised of the junk and stolen parts from Beauvais construction sites. It was built by a group that would later become known as the Junkers. A well-known theory suggests that the Junkers actually owe their name to Beaumont's outlook: the station looked like a piece of junk floating in space. Later on, as Junkers grew richer, Beaumont was rebuilt, and while some of its parts still resemble its rough origins, most of the station looks more or less professionally constructed. Beaumont is frequently visited by various parties, including Gallic pirates, freelancing traders, and covert agents of Gallic corporations. It is known to be the primary local source of Nox, a drug that originates from Provence and has gained massive popularity in Ile-de-France and other higher-class planets of Central Gallia.

Sarcelles Shipping Facility

Ile-de-France Shipping was founded in 501 AGS. As a shipping company that specializes in space cargo transportation, the company considered establishing headquarters in space rather than planetside to be a major benefit. IDF's Board of Directors chose the location one trade lane run away from the Burgundy jump gate. Construction of the station that was named Sarcelles took five years to complete, and in 506 AGS it was officially opened. In years to come, it was rebuilt and expanded several times to match an increasing amount of IDF shipments heading through Sarcelles to and from the Gallic Border Worlds.
The First Gallic War was a disaster for many small shipping companies, especially those heavily involved with Normandy region trade. IDF focused on the Core Worlds and Border Worlds instead. Backed by the government and supported by EFL Oil & Machinery, IDF currently controls a vast market of civilian shipments across the House of Gallia. Sarcelles is still considered the headquarters of the company, but not many board members and chief officers choose to live and work there. Despite the best efforts of IDF designers, living on Planet New Paris is much more comfortable. IDF Shipping owns a small island near Ile du Palais where a large "office city" was constructed to serve as the company's actual headquarters and most of its top employees live and work there.

Montmartre Space Colony

Gallic records of the first steps of Ile-de-France space exploration are known to be incomplete. Existing records indicate that the area where Montmartre is now located was the site of the very first station construction in Gallic space, dated between 80 and 90 AGS. The first station known as Montmartre Space Colony was built in 197 AGS and was fully rebuilt several times, the last rebuild taking place about 200 years ago.
Montmartre in its modern state is a huge station that houses almost a hundred thousand people, being one of the largest and well-equipped space colonies ever built. While it is not equipped with its own extensive defenses, it is under the protective umbrella of the state-of-the-art planetary defenses built around Planet New Paris. The station docking facilities are administered by Royal Police, but most of the station is under civilian administration. The structure and competency of Montmartre's administration mostly replicate local governments found on populated planets of the House. The station has its own light industry that employs much of its population, producing a wide array of consumer goods, many of which are exported to New Paris and elsewhere.

Battleship Montreuil

The Burgundy system, despite being located just one jump away from Ile-de-France, was discovered later than most other systems that currently form the Gallic Core Worlds. Moreover, the first humans to settle in it were pirate groups that would later become known as Gallic Brigands. Burgundy was always a dangerous place compared to the Core Worlds, and the Royal Navy was tasked to create a strong defensive shield to secure Ile-de-France from possible intrusions. The task became more important (and complex) after the start of the Second Gallic War. While Burgundy's trade lanes were under tight Navy control, asteroid fields in the system were dominated by the Council and other unfriendly groups. With relative ease, the Council could send its ships into Ile-de-France using those fields. To secure the Hexagon from a possible direct attack from Burgundy, Battleship Montreuil was stationed near the Sarcelles Shipping Facility.
The battleship itself belongs to a dated Triomphant class that was succeeded by Richelieu class. It was previously tasked to defend Planet Nevers in Burgundy and participated in several military actions in Dauphine and Champagne in the early stages of the Second Gallic War. Currently it is tasked to perform continuous long-range radar scans on nearby trade lanes, and to serve as a home base for a large number of Navy patrols that scout the nearby asteroid fields. The battleship also leaves its position from time to time, flying along Vincennes Nebula and Senart Debris Field to search for potential intruders.

Versailles Residence

Versailles was completed in 607 AGS after 20 years of continuous building. The station was ordered by King Richard V as his new space residence. Richard was a splendor-loving hedonist who chose to oversee the construction himself. However, constant delays and budget issues prevented the station's completion during his active lifetime. At the time when the station was complete, Richard V was mortally ill and could not leave New Paris. He never had a chance to see his creation in person.
Richard V was an ambiguous figure. But his popularity with the Gallic people was hard to underestimate. After his death, the Gallic Liberation Movement and its supporters in the Parliament passed a law that would restrict Royal family expenses to a small sum annually substracted from the House's budget. At the same time, many parts of Versailles were offered for rent to compensate skyrocketing construction and maintenance costs. Between years 630 and 640 AGS, the Liberation Movement lost much of its former influence, and several of its most notable leaders were tried for treason and convicted. Eventually, the Movement was banned in 636 AGS under the reign of Louis V. Shortly afterwards, many limitations for Royal expenses were removed. The change was explained by increased Maquis terrorist activity that required enhancing security for Royal residences, both planetside and in space. Those few people and companies who could afford renting space on Versailles were asked to move out, and they later claimed that they were denied sufficient compensation.
With improved security equipment introduced after 645 AGS, Versailles became a popular place for the Kings and Queens of Gallia to visit. It is a large and lush facility that looks more like a palace in space than an actual space station. One distinct difference from other space stations is that Versailles has far larger living quarters, passageways and halls. It houses fewer people than it could with more optimal space distribution. Yet, Versailles is a Royal residence, not a colony. Only a few hundred people are allowed inside, and few outside the Royal Court ever receive invitations.
Due to its status as the second favourite Royal residence (after Louvre on Planet New Paris), Versailles is a target of choice for many Gallic terrorist groups. The Maquis are the most serios threat, and they have already attempted to attack the facility three times, one of which (in 715 AGS) nearly ended successfully. A captured transport loaded with conventional explosives and two nuclear warheads was brought to the station using faked ID signals. The transport was supposed to bring water and other supplies to the station, and Versailles command could tell the forgery only in the last moment. The transport was obliterated by turret fire not far from the station's docks. The explosion was massive, but the nuclear detonators did not activate, and the warheads were taken away from the station area and disarmed. The station sustained minimal damage.

Rambouilette Shipyard

Rambouilette construction was finalized in 247 AGS, and the shipyard was the first full-service shipyard built in Gallia. It was built and operated by the Royal Navy, tasked to research and construct large capital ships that would be necessary for Sirius' conquest in the then distant future. At about 600 AGS, the facility switched focus from research to mass production of the new capital ship types that were approved for future Navy service. Just like many Ile-de-France bases, Rambouilette was re-built several times throughout its history, with more docks and living space added to adapt ship building needs. The only civilian ships ever built in Rambouilette were the luxury cruise liners for the Royal family.
Since the beginning of the war with Bretonia, Rambouilette was tasked to supply spare components for ships in addition to building newer ones. Additional workforce was brought in from Maine and Picardy to supply increased demand. The shipyard is also one of the places where one can hire an experienced ship crew.

Fontainebleau Residence

Fontainebleau Residence was built in the year 259 AGS as the very first space residence for Gallic monarchs. Unlike Versailles that was built some 350 years later, Fountainebleau was (and still is) a medium-sized facility that resembles a medium-sized space residence rather than a gorgeous palace. Even before Versailles was built, it was not visited too frequently by Gallic monarchs who preferred the vast spaces and plentiful services of their planetside residences. After Versailles was completed, most Kings and Queens, including Charles XI, preferred Versailles to its counterpart. Yet, since it is a secure facility in Planet New Paris' orbit, Fountainebleau is frequently used as a transit point when the monarch is travelling off-world to other systems.

Avon Hideout

Avon was one of the first pirate bases founded in Gallia. No one knows exactly when this occured or who were the people daring enough to inhabit an asteroid in the central part of Vincennes Nebula. The asteroid was hollowed by tunnels without much planning or control, and towards 700 AGS the facility literally started to fall apart. With many parts of the asteroid depressurized, pirates that stayed there (most of them were Gallic Brigands at that moment) chose to leave. Maquis, a newly emerged group, soon chose the place to become one of their primary bases. Maquis and later Council invested a large amount of resources in returning the asteroid base to habitability.
These days, Avon is still far from being a reliable facility, with dozens of unexplored tunnels and pathways. Pressurization problems still emerge from time to time. However, the base does fulfil most housing and security needs of the numerous Maquis who live there. Maquis pilots that use Avon as a base for operations have to be very cautious, since the whole of Ile-de-France space is tightly controlled by the Royal forces. Maquis patrols are scarce and prefer to stay away from trade lanes. Most recon is gathered by mercenaries of various sorts who frequent the station. None of them are part of Maquis or any other faction, and most operate a small legal shipping business. Needless to say that the goods they carry to and from Avon are not always legal. Maquis themselves trade quite a lot, using desolate areas of Ile-de-France to reach jump holes into neighboring systems. The black market on Avon is rather diverse. These days, the station has become known as a reliable source of nanocapacitors.

Soissons Mining Facility

Soissons Mining Facility was built in 541 AGS by Gallic Metal Service. It occupies a position far below the orbital plane in a desolate ice asteroid field known as Retz Field. The field is one of the few sources of hydrocarbons found in Gallia. Retz was one of the most efficient mining operations in Gallic space, with literally no valued substance left behind in mined-out asteroids. Nowadays the mining still continues, although the field is nearing its depletion. In about 30-40 years it will be fully devoid of any notable hydrocarbon deposits.
Soissons is an old station that went through little reconstruction during recent years. Housing is rather uncomfortable, and GMS took measures to relocate its workers to better-equipped facilities, replacing them with mechanized labour.

Melun Research Institution

Located far above the orbital plane of Ile-de-France, Melun Research Facility is one of the top secret research facilities operated by the government of Gallia. It orbits a small dwarf planet named Mennecy. Specifics about the types of research conducted at Melun remain unknown. Most of them are likely to be related to the weapons and defensive systems developed for Gallic warships, and to mysterious alien artifacts found in remote parts of Gallia.

Fleury-Merogis Prison Station

Fleury-Merogis is a prison facility built in 464 AGS in the orbit of Planet New Paris. It is the largest space prison facility in Gallia, housing nearly 20,000 of the most dangerous convicts, most of them sentenced for life. Few ever managed to escape from this place, since space around the station is well-guarded, both by the prison's own defenses and by Planet New Paris' defensive grids. The Gallic Royal Police maintain a full non-disclosure policy about all space prison facilities, and no information is released about the number of escapes. Those few who were lucky enough to be released from Fleury-Merogis report that conditions within the prisons are horrible, medical facilities lack sufficient capacity, and some parts of the station are under full control of the convicts with no guards daring to venture inside.
During the Second Gallic War, many captured Maquis and Council members were imprisoned in Fleury-Merogis. Some of them were tried for terrorism and treason, but some never faced the court. When this information reached Gallic media, many argued that captured Council soldiers and pilots should be treated as prisoners of war, not criminals.

Commodity Mining

Hydrocarbons

Hydrocarbons
Hydrocarbons are a class of organic compounds composed only of hydrogen and carbon molecules, resulting in a wide variety of substances that have important industrial applications. While hydrocarbons naturally occur in a gaseous state almost everywhere in the known universe, frozen deposits present the most easily exploited form of the substance. Hydrocarbon mining is key to the industrialization of the Sirius Sector as it provides the raw materials for the creation of the Ship Hull Panels and Optronics, upon which modern society depends.

Scrap Metal

Scrap Metal
The rapid industrialization that followed the settlement of the Sirius Sector has resulted in large fields of Scrap Metal, the detritus resulting from extensive manufacturing and mining operations. These debris fields present both a navigational hazard and a potential second-stage resource, so a small cottage industry has sprung up among those who collect scrap metal and resell it at smelting plants.
