DSCore: Mammoth

The Mammoth is a Transport built in Liberty for dangerous and lengthy trading missions through the Independent Systems and the Border Worlds. When pirate activity is on the rise, reinforced hull and advanced power array come in most handy for traders; the Mammoth offers both for a moderate price.

Review (4.88)

The EL-HiL51 "Mammoth" is a good transport for a budding merchant, small faction, or anyone who just wants an affordable ship to move cargo from point A to point B. The ship itself has a nice weapons layout and overall design, but the deciding factor is honestly the price. Typically, the CT-49X "Gull" is most people's first transport after saving up the roughly 6,500,000 credits for it. The Mammoth would be the next logical step up from that. The Mammoth has exactly the same amount of turrets, identical power core, 1,200 more cargo units (just over double), 100 more nanobots and shield batteries, and only costs roughly 5,000,000 credits more than the Gull. It has acceptable maneuverability, but it certainly can't outrun or out fly a fighter or bomber.

The layout allows the turrets to fire 4 forward, 5 backward, 3 to either side, 4 down, and 5 up. With only 5 turrets and an average to below-average power core, selecting the right turrets is important. Having at least 1 Zapper and a few Dulzians for snub defense would be a good idea. My two preferred layouts would be 2 civilian transport turrets, 2 Charon transport turrets & 1 Dulzian on the rear mount, or 2 civilian transport turrets, 2 Dulzians, and 1 Zapper on the rear mount. The large size of the cargo hold means that you can easily use a MK VIII armor upgrade, or potentially a MK IV heavy armor upgrade, which would improve the hull strength to 175,000 and 210,000 respectively. Even with the MK IV heavy armor upgrade, the heaviest transport shield, and 5 turrets, you'll have double the cargo space of the Gull, and that means double the potential profits. All in all, this is a very useful ship, either as a stepping stone to a larger cargo ship, or just to keep for small runs in the confines of inner-house space. Either way, you'll be able to make Sirius credits with a Mammoth.
