Background

Built in 823 A.S by the Rambouilette Shipyard, the Sombre Destin, a Valor of the Richelieu class was intended to serve on the Bretonian front in order to provide a decisive advantage. He possessed the main characteristics of a ship of this class. The only unconventional point was the name of the ship, which was clearly distanced from Gallic traditions based on grandeur, honor and heroism. The name’s origin is although uncertain though it was probably chosen by his future captain: Pierre Vaillant. The ship came into service in 824 A.S and was immediately sent to the front lines. His first action was to destroy a Council Redemption in Orkney. The Sombre Destin was assigned to the Battleship Carcassonne's Cohort in Magellan where he stayed for almost a year. He strove to weaken Liberty's forces and create a breach within California system. Very quickly, the Sombre Destin could boast of a consequent list of achievements. From the month of July 825 A.S, the ship was moved to the Bretonian front in preparation for the final offensive on New London. At first, the ship had to defend the Leeds system against the desperate actions of the Allies. Once again, Captain Vaillant demonstrated the extent of his potential and the Sombre Destin began to become a name respected by his allies and feared by his opponents.

During the summer of 825 A.S, he participated in the first great battle of New London around Southampton during where the battleship played a key role. Damaged as a result of this battle, he had to be repaired and remained a few weeks without battles, behind the front lines. When the New London Blitz began in November 825 A.S, the battleship was fully operational and won several skirmishes. Vaillant entered in the prestigious Marine Royale Gauloise after this event. Thus the Sombre Destin become a masterpiece in the great chessboard of the war. The Marine forces started to prepare special operations. They created the Malouine Task Force early in 826 A.S. The Sombre Destin was its flagship. In February 826 A.S, the battleship went to Issoudun Drydock in Edinburgh. He would receive a global overhaul, the addition of modules and experimental weapons, a better autonomy and the establishment of a command center. It results in one of the most modern and powerful Valor that Gallia ever seen. The battleship has some elements comparable to the “Conquérant” class whose Battleship Dax is the most representative vessel. Therefore it was officially decided to classify the Sombre Destin as a "Conquérant" class ship.

Vaillant did not wait long to test his new weapon. Indeed, with the crisis of Aland Shipyard a new opportunity appeared for the Gallic Forces. The Independent Miners Guild requested the assistance of the Gallic forces to create a diversion. Vaillant took over the entire operation and executed an audacious attack in Cambridge. The months passed and the countdown to the final battle was drawing near. The Sombre Destin took part in the final battle around New London. Unlike many other ships it suffers relatively limited damage. While the remaining forces were exploiting the breach, the battleship was gathering several ships around the logistic vessel Vauban in the way to prepare an organized retreat. Therefore, the Battlegroup Sombre Destin was created, under the aegis of Commandant Vaillant. The withdrawal from New London went smoothly although an incident could have turned the operation into a total failure: the jump gate leading to Leeds being sealed, the Battlegroup had to take the asteroid field of Trafalgar Base which took a precious time. Despite that, the fleet managed to return to Leeds without suffering any losses. However they discovered the tragic and terrible glassing of the planet. In accordance with the orders from the Marine Royale and under the initiative of Vaillant himself, the Battlegroup didn’t engage the evacuation vessels. Instead, he defended the regrouping of Gallic forces and their departure to the Hebrides. A small part of the Sombre Destin fleet participated in the last battle of Leeds when the Allies entered within the system. Finally, the Sombre Destin was one of the last ships to leave the crumbling system.

In accordance with the wish of the Marine and especially to satisfy his intentions, Vaillant planned the return of the Sombre Destin in Gallia with his Battlegroup. However, Vaillant used a kind of ruse to formalize his battleship as one of the Enclave's flagship in order to gather as many soldiers and ships as possible loyal to Vaillant, before secretly going to the Duchy. Today the Sombre Destin is certainly one of the most known and most feared Valors. With an impressive track record; an experienced crew and absolute confidence in his charismatic and mysterious Commander Vaillant; that is obvious this ship will have a very uncommon destiny in the upcoming years.
