"Stonebreaker" Battlecruiser Rocket Launcher
The Stonebreaker is a rocket propelled mining charge designed for Heavy Battlecruiser mount platforms, and is a scaled up version of the original Cruiser Heavy class Rockhound. Initially designed by Planetform as a deep planetary crust probe that could be launched from orbit en masse, the Stonebreaker utilizes a proprietary solid state penetrator head to achieve low friction entry up to half a kilometer deep into a variety of rocky substrates. As Planetform transitioned from automated orbital deep core sampling to more economical manned surface sampling, the designs were sold off to several interested parties including Deep Space Engineering.
The Rockhound was first repurposed as an asteroid deep core sampling probe, and then as a payload delivery platform for deep penetration seismic fracturing. Scaling down the overall size of each rocket by over a half, replacing long-range high penetration communications and sensor suites with two hundred kiloton yield seismic charges, and downgrading the penetrator rating from five hundred meters to ten, the current Rockhound was redesigned as an inexpensive method for asteroid based surface ablation and mineral vein exposure. Relaxed policies stemming from the recent dissolution of the Libertonian Bureau of Pharmaceuticals Ordnance and Wetlands has resulted in widespread proliferation - some even making their way into the hands of pirates.
