Ensign James Lambert is a distinguished officer of the Liberty Navy's Primary Fleet, perhaps best known for rescuing the girl Pita from the Liberty Rogues. He is also the only active-duty Naval officer to openly use the banned substance cardamine. This, combined with a history of mental instability, has caused him to be the subject of great scrutiny by Naval High Command.

Personal History

Background

James Lambert was born on Planet Curacao to Richard Lambert, a Bounty Hunter, and Christina Wallace, an Orbital Spa employee. His parents never married. James' mother died in recorded transshipment accident at Freeport 4 in Magellan during 798 AS. Subsequently, Lambert was taken by his father to Sheffield Station in Manchester, where he lived with his father for two years and began training as a Bounty Hunter in 800 AS, at the age of 12. He became a full member of the Bounty Hunters Guild three years later, at age 15.

Spent six years as a member of the Bounty Hunters Guild, working primarily in Bretonia, the Tau systems, and parts of Kusari. Records obtained from the BHG indicate initial promise but sub-par performance throughout career. This was followed by several years as a small time independant freelancer, where transit records indicate he primarily traded legitimate goods between the houses.

At the Academy

James Lambert applied for the accelerated OCS program at West Point Military Academy in 817 AS. He demonstrated exceptional ability in strategic planning, extravehicular operations, and capital ship tactics. However, Lambert was hampered by consistently low scores in small craft operations, and also racked up a large number of demerits in his early months for failure to adhere to Naval procedure.

"James Lambert very nearly washed out of the Academy in his first form, but our continued patience with him paid off in the long run. A hard-edged, irreverent ex-Bounty Hunter vet walked into the academy, but two years later a polished naval officer walked out. Proof that our system works."

- Admiral Matthew Evans

Commandant, West Point Military Academy

Lambert graduated from the Academy as part of the class of 819 AS. He graduated 23rd of 61 in the class.

Beginning a Career

After graduation, Lambert was assigned to the Navy's Primary Fleet, where he took an initial tour of duty as a passed midshipman. Despite very nearly setting a record for the number of fighter craft he lost during that first tour, he was promoted to Ensign and began to fly a Guardian Very Heavy Fighter.

As an Ensign, Lambert was taken under the tutelage of then-Lieutenant Commander Alan Polstari. The two worked closely together on a multitude of occasions to combat the rampant piracy and smuggling within Liberty core space. Lambert also purchased an Upholder Bomber from the secondhand market and utilized it on several raids into Rheinland space.

Rogue Captivity

In August of 819 AS, Lambert was promoted to Lieutenant (Junior-Grade). Merely a week after receiving the promotion, he went out on a routine patrol where he encountered a smuggler near West Point. He pursued the smuggler into the Badlands, where he was ambushed by several ships of the Liberty Rogues. After a short fight, Lambert lost yet another ship and was taken into captivity by the Rogues. He was reported MIA several hours later, and a team of Marines was dispatched to find him.

For reasons that remain unknown, he was placed in the custody of the girl Pita on Buffalo Base, where he was subjected to physical and psychological torture. According to his account, he was also taken on one occasion to meet with a female cyborg named Banshee (Character), who subjected him to what is commonly known as "Cardamine torture". Lambert was exposed to a large amount of the drug in pure gas form, and was repeatedly forced to suffer the withdrawal effects to the point of near-death. Banshee apparently did this as revenge for an encounter between the two of them years before.

Lambert, however, managed to escape Rogue custody, but was unable to escape the base before both Banshee and Pita caught up to him. He shot Banshee, but Pita recaptured him and took him off the base herself for unknown reasons. Fortunately a SAR team lead by Commander Jorzza Clark managed to track Pita's ship to the Texas system. There, the Navy forces present were able to recover Lambert, but Pita escaped with some other Rogues.

Post-Captivity

Lambert was returned to the Navy after enduring nearly a month as a prisoner of war. He was placed on a temporary prohibitory status while the Navy debriefed him and investigated the events of his captivity. Lambert's debriefing was headed by Captain Alan Polstari.

At some point during this time, Lambert reportedly encountered a pair of Nomad vessels. Apparently, this was a peaceful but lengthy encounter, but any details remain highly classified.

Lambert and Pita

Lambert encountered Pita several more times after returning to active duty. Slowly, he began to realize that the girl was a victim of a bad situation and he began actively working to try and convince her to leave the Rogues and start a new life. She resisted until she encountered a Nomad-infested Deep Space Engineering employee who she was forced to kill in self-defense. Traumatized from the experience, Lambert took her away from the Rogues and earned her trust.

However, the next day, a group of Rogues led by Buster Commodore apprehended Pita and took her back to the Rogue Ruby against her will. Lambert was devastated by the loss of the girl, and assembled a group of friends to get Pita back. They finally found her, with the help of DSE employee Catelyn Smith, and conducted an operation to get the girl back from Ruby. Lambert recovered Pita and killed Ruby himself, and they returned to Liberty space so the girl could start a new life.

Lambert became Pita's legal guardian, and they lived on Planet Denver in a house he purchased. He was awarded the Bronze Star with Valor Device for his actions in the operation.

The Happy Times

In October 819, Lambert was given his first significant command, the Liberty Navy Logistics Ship LLS Mesa Verde. He took this ship along with three companies of Liberty Marines, to the Leeds system for an extended deployment under the command of Admiral Rachel Baker. As de-facto commander of the combined Navy/Marine force aboard the Verde, Lambert demonstrated leadership and strategic ability, coordinating major rescue efforts throughout the system.

Despite being technically deployed in Bretonia, he was able to spend a great deal of time at home, where he was able to continue Pita's education. He also finally elected to enroll the girl in a carefully selected school program.

James Lambert was promoted to the rank of full Lieutenant in November 819 AS.

In Freefall

In late December 819, Pita left Lambert's house on Denver in search of Buster Commodore, the former Liberty Rogue who was now a freelancer. After receiving a note from her expressing intent to find Buster and searching for her for several weeks, Lambert gave up hope that she would return to Liberty.

He quickly spiraled into a deep depression, and departed Liberty space without notifying any superiors. He was subsequently listed as AWOL by the Navy, and was suspended pending investigation.

Lambert had only made it so far as Freeport 14, located on the lawless fringes of Liberty space. There he spent at least a month, and many residents of the station recall him as an angry drunk who was constantly starting fistfights in various bars. Reports indicate he departed the station in March 820 aboard a freelancer gunship called the Wayfarer.

Recovery

Lambert spent several months aboard the Wayfarer, and began to recover from his alcohol dependency and depression with the renewed sense of purpose the crew of the gunboat gave him. During this time he was sighted on various ports around the Edge Worlds, but particularly on the fringes of Corsair space.

In June, Lambert got word that a girl matching Pita's description had been captured by an MND vessel in Rheinland. He managed to convince the crew of the Wayfarer to divert there from the Omegas, and they tracked her down in Dresden. Pita described her struggles alone and how she had heard Lambert had been killed after going missing. Lambert realized he'd overreacted to her sudden departure and had misunderstood her intentions.

However, they encountered Buster later on the same day, and Buster revealed that there had been an outside force at work trying to prevent him from meeting with Pita. Upon Pita's request, Lambert reluctantly allowed her to go with the former Rogue, with the promise that she would return to see him at some point in the future.

Lambert realized he needed to get his life back in order if he ever wanted to be able to do the right thing for Pita, so he elected to reach out to the Navy regarding his status. After several weeks of back-and-forth contact with Admirals Baker and Polstari, the Navy finally agreed to pardon his AWOL charges and return him to active duty. However, Lambert was demoted to Ensign and assigned to a low-risk posting so he could undergo psychological treatment.

He spent several weeks on low-risk duty, and then was assigned as Executive Officer (XO) aboard his old ship, the Mesa Verde, with Lieutenant Steven Falkland in command. The ship was in the process of being converted from a general cargo hauler to a marine transport and assault vehicle, so the posting involved no active service. Lambert slowly worked his way back up to doing regular patrols in his fighter, and on one patrol encountered Pita in Hudson. She described her life since departing to live with Buster, and Lambert quickly realized that he had been neglecting her. Soon thereafter, Pita decided she wanted to return to Liberty with Lambert.

In recognition of continued improvement, James Lambert was reinstated to Lieutenant in August, 820 AS.

Psychological Profile

Initial Diagnosis

Initially, Mr. Lambert had a very difficult time adjusting to life at the Academy and military structure in general. His background as a Bounty Hunter and independent had instilled in him a very casual attitude towards duty and responsibility. He was frequently given demerits in his first form for various small infractions against Navy procedure. He soon began to change his attitude, however, and by the end of his tenure the demerits had become limited to merely an occasional occurrence. He still seems to possess his casual, laid-back nature, but it is now stiffened by adherence to formal military conventions.

Mr. Lambert is a somewhat difficult man to understand. He clearly possesses leadership qualities and the attention to detail of a skilled administrator, but seems uncomfortable around superior officers. Perhaps this indicates some level of general distrust in the command structure. However, when alone or in an environment within which he feels comfortable, his natural leadership ability tends to come to the surface. Otherwise, seems to have a steady and reliable persona. No signs of any psychological disorders were detected.

Post-Captivity

Mr. Lambert suffered a very traumatic experience in his captivity with the Rogues, and his follow-up examination indicated some very early and relatively minor signs of some psychiatric disorders. He reported difficulty sleeping and some instances of nightmares, generally related to his captivity. We attribute this to a developing minor case of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, which, while minor, should be carefully watched. In addition, Mr. Lambert exhibits some characteristics of schizophrenia and sociopathic tendencies, but neither of these tested conclusively, and no treatment has been prescribed at this time.

Post-AWOL

Lambert underwent an extensive set of psychological tests prior to being accepted back into the Liberty Navy. His attending psychologist was Cdr. Jeffrey Draper, widely considered the Navy's top expert on psychological trauma.

"It is clear that Mr. Lambert exhibits mild to moderate symptoms of several different disorders, including acute stress disorder, paranoid personality disorder, and a developing alcohol dependence.

It is my professional opinion that Mr. Lambert has developed all of these conditions recently and as a direct result of his experience as a prisoner of war and several exposures to a powerful non-human mental force. As such his condition is likely treatable with time and regular sessions with a Navy psychologist."

- Commander Jeffrey Draper, Medical Corps, Liberty Navy

Lambert met regularly with Commander Draper, and after some initial discomfort, opened up to the psychologist. The sessions became very important for his continued recovery, and were helped along by his re-connection with Pita.
