The Mining Ship has been built for one purpose : to mine. The priorities for a mining ship are
+

+
* '''Ability to mine'''
+
* '''Massive cargo hold''' - to maximise its autonomy
+
* '''Heavy armour''' - to maximise its territory of operation
+
* '''Defence infrastructure''' - to reduce the likelhood of being hijacked
+

+
All these requirements were admirably satisified in the ship's design. The Miner has a tremendous armor rating of 145,000 which is far beyond any transport with comparable capactity can offer. The cargo bay is also very large, offering an excellent value. These properties make the Miner an attractive proposition for ferrying goods, with good reason. However, it's primary purpose is to mine -- that is to stand still, in a hostile environment, and be able to take whatever circumstances thrown at it.
+

+
Potential buyers of the Miner should keep this in mind: it will do a mining job very well, but it has not been designed as a freighter or transport.
+

+
If you are considering the purchase of the Miner for goods transport, you need to know this:
+

+
* These ships were made for minining, and mining's what they do.
+
* The maneuverability of this ship is terrible. The thick hull has a lot of inertia. Fast turns are impossible, evasive flight maneuvers are not an option.
+
* '''This ship is huge.''' (both on the inside and the outside). It's size requires very precise alignment when docking to trade lanes and gates. The auto-dock system struggles severely with the bulk of the ship, and manual intervention is frequently required to prevent locking up against trade rings and even jump gates.
+
* '''This ship is noisy.''' No effort was made to silence or even dampen the internal machinery. The hydraulic hiss of the pneumatics is ''always'' there, even when the mining mode is disengaged.
+

+
In some people's opinnion, the benefits outweigh the drawbacks and the miner is occasionally used as a transport ship. I am one of those people, so I can't recommend against using the Miner as a cargo ship. However, it comes with a strong sanity health warning.
+

+
''Prolonged exposure to the noise level produced by the mechanical workings of the ship is very wearing.

Take long breaks between assignments.''}}

The Hegemon is a massive, heavily armored medium transport. It's high hull rating makes adding armor a very effective way of increasing it's survivability - a standard armor type 8 greatly adds to the amount of time this craft can withstand an attack, allowing it's pilot to withdraw to the nearest friendly base. Even more armor is, of course, better, but will cost a relatively high amount of cargo space on the Hegemon.
+

+
The Hegemon is primarily for mining, but it can, in open space, be an effective attack/pirate transport as well. It has a good cargo hold size, generous turret layout that allows 8 turrets to fire forward and backwards. Even it's cruise disruptor slot can fire backwards, which can be a lifesaver if you are chased (this however is most likely a 4.85 bug). In open space a Hegemon will out-turn and outmaneuver a pirate transport.
+
Two typical configurations are:
+
- A mix of 6 type 2, and 4 type 1 turrets (substitute a pulse turret for a mining turret if used for mining) and a civilian transport shield. This configuration is primarily designed to handle other attack transports. In sufficient numbers (2 or 3 hegemons with this configuration) they can also decimate most gunboats. Do not put a stronger shield to this configuration, you're going to need all available power to the guns. The civilian transport shield draws 500 while recharging, the advanced transport one 3000, and they have the same recharge rate.
+
- All available slots to type 3 turrets. This configuration will support a heavy shield, and is more defensive. Use this if you primarily swat NPCs and intend to pay most pirates. This configuration is reasonable versus bombers and fighters - especially if you chain-fire the turrets. This configuration can still damage attack transports, but you're unlikely to defeat them alone with type 3 guns. I do not recommend using type 4 turrets. The hegemon has so many turret slots that you'll be out of power when using them before you know it. The turrets are also spread out which hurts accuracy with the type 4's.
+

+
The ship has a number of serious drawbacks though.
+
1: It's very wide, which causes it to bump into objects. This can be annoying when maneuvering in asteroid fields - the primary operational area of this ship. To mitigate this you can pilot it from cockpit view manually, using the pitch and turn to avoid dense pockets of asteroids.
+
2: This ship will frequently get stuck in tradelanes or jump gates. To mitigate this, align the ship manually with the center of the lane/gate. This is best done from cockpit view. Sometimes, when stuck, a /stuck command will trigger the lane or gate.
+
3: The ship has an extremely large surface, especially from the top/bottom, but also from the rear. This makes scoring SNAC hits on this ship very easy - even from a distance. Avoid fights with bombers in a Hegemon, you are unlikely to win.}}

The Hegemon is a real disappointment. First, with a loadout of Transport Mining Turrets, it does mine extremely well. However getting it to where it does its work is another story. Mining, by definition, takes place in asteroid or rock fields. Navigating such an environment is a misery in one of these ships. It is also very noisy, annoyingly so, even when not in mining mode. I know the argument. Increased manuverability and noise suppression cost money. Well, of course. I would have happily paid another 10 or 15 million for it to manuver well in asteroid fields and be less noisy. Let's face it, folks, you get what you pay for. And even at 37 million, which is 15 million more than the current list price, it will more than pay for itself in two trips (This is on the official server. Some servers offer prices that would pay for it in 1 trip). After that, it's all gravy.
+

+
I would still recommend this ship for serious miners. Just be warned there are some severe deficiencies.}}
