"ASMD" Railgun

The latest in cutting-edge offensive technology from Selection International, the ASMD (Accelerated Slug Mass Driver) represents a new breakthrough in hybrid weapons design. The railgun's ammunition takes the form of a superheated nanite cloud that coalesces rapidly into a ferromagnetic slug before being accelerated at blinding speeds, with the low mass of the projectile being more than offset by the raw force of the resultant impact. While concerns with overheating render the weapon's rate of fire slower than that of energy-based armament, the use of nanites as a payload renders the ASMD practically immune to ammunition constraints, in comparison to other ballistic and kinetic weaponry available to fighter craft.

The emergence of hybrid railgun technology onto the open market poses a unique challenge to the sector's shield manufacturers, as the superheated metal slug tends to punch through most shield harmonics with enough force to violently destabilise the energy field. Only time will tell if shield technology can evolve to meet this new threat, or if these weapons are set to join the Debilitator series of weaponry as a premier shield-busting option for pilots across the sector.
