Tantalum is a hard, blue-gray metal that is highly resistant to corrosion and chemically similar to Niobium. Since it is chemically inert, it is valuable as a material in laboratory equipment and is often substituted for Platinum. It is widely used to manufacture Tantalum capacitors for use in consumer electronics. It is an important ingredient in some alloys that possess high melting points, making it useful in extreme heat environments such as engines and nuclear reactors.
